Ever hear of Zumba?

If you like to dance, sweat and get in shape this might be the class for you

By Petra Mandic, Healthy & Fit Magazine

It may not be the clearest name ever given an exercise workout, but I know this much for sure: It is fun!

Zumba is a Latin International style dance that incorporates choreography from such famous dance styles as the merengue, cumbia, salsa, reggaeton, and even a bit of hip hop.

According to ZumbaÕs Web site, Zumba features aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. It is a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps.

I took a Zumba class at the Downtown Lansing YMCA with fitness instructor Stephanie Valavanis. She likens the moves to a mix of MTV and Latin Salsa. Call the YMCA for times and location of classes.

ÒZumba is great because there is a built in cardio interval ranging from fast to slow movements,Ó Valavanis said. ÒItÕs a great workout for anyone because of the low impact nature of the dance routines.Ó

I must admit: I had my own doubts as to how effective this style of dancing really was. But I was curious, so I threw on my leotard and tights and took the class. After an hour of intense dancing my skepticism was cleared away. Not only was this class a total blast, but it also kept its promise on the hardcore body workout that was going to be achieved. Valavanis said that Zumba can burn anywhere from 600 to 800 calories per workout.

This exercise works the entire body including shoulders, back, and abdominals while mainly targeting trouble areas such as hips, inner along with outer thighs, quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves. Her Zumba classes include people of all ages and gender, ranging from ages 18-70 years old. However, Valevanis said more women than men seem to take interest in Zumba fitness.

My first Zumba experience was a complete success. I had plenty of fun; the instructor was very qualified and energetic, and managed to perform a complete body workout.

I would definitely suggest Zumba as an option to anyone choosing a stress-free, fun, and extremely effective workout. It is by far the most energetic, positive, and easygoing exercise program I have come across.

ÒYou donÕt even feel like you are working out; you are not watching the clock,Ó Valevanis said. ÒIt seems like you are out dancing at a party and having a good timeÓ. I couldnÕt agree more.
