A fitness horoscope! Learn what the stars have in store for you
by Ellen Bluhm-Goik
Sun Signs are divided into one of four elements - Fire, Earth, Air,
and Water - and further into one of three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed,
and Mutable. Both element and modality combine to produce twelve
primary patterns of energy or Sun signs. In choosing fitness modality
and what disciplines work best for an individual it is helpful to
explore the routines and exercises attuned to each Sign’s essential
energy patterns.
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Mars ruled Aries calls to the Spirit of the Warrior. Winning is
important and their highly competitive energy is conducive to the
martial arts, sports and activities laced with courageous
demonstrations. They love the adrenalin rush and you will find a lot of
these individuals on the race track (or at least in the red sports car)
sky diving or in competitive fitness programs such as Mr. And Mrs.
Atlas. Wear the safety helmet and face guard as Aries is impulsive and
the head and face are vulnerable.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
Creature of Comfort Taurus is sometimes difficult to motivate to act
quickly, however once inspired their persistence is legendary; like
Orson Wells said, I will sell no wine before its time, any efforts
exuded are sure to see tangible results. In fact if there is not a
physical outlet for this sensual sign a build up of energy results in
an addictive state of indulgence. Contact with raw materials while
creating something useful appeals to this sign’s need to possess and
create something of lasting value. Whether the activity involves
chopping wood for a fire, building houses or building muscle from
weight lifting workouts should encourage endurance, self esteem and an
appreciation of the beauty of the physical form in action.
Gemini (May 21 - June 21)
These environmental engineers handle multi-tasking with more skill than
50’s Hollywood Super Mom, June Cleaver. Other fictional Gemini
characters include Curious George. Eating while driving and jogging
while listening to their i-pods occupy their restless need to do more
than one think at a time. Physical activity such as laser tag or
re-enacting civil war battles cater to their innate dexterity of
mind/body coordination while appealing to their love of the new and the
youthful. When Gemini starts to get bored they should bring a buddy
along to the gym where they can catch up on the latest gossip and make
the social
connections they thrive on.
Cancer (June 22 - July 22)
Because the Cancer individual can be self conscious about how they look
in a bathing suit or working out in public they may prefer exercising
in the privacy of their home; the center and sanctuary of their world.
Choose DVDs to work out at home, quieter yoga classes with nurturing
instructors. Non-competitive activities work best such as swimming
(their element is water) and Tai Chi. Otherwise fear of discomfort may
override action resulting in the sign’s propensity for procrastination.
The stomach is a vulnerable area of the body. They should not eat on
the run. Abdominal toning is important and will help strengthen the
flow of energy in the root chakra located there.
Leo (July 23 - August 22)
As a fire sign Leo, will not shy away from the competition of sport;
especially when a trophy can be gleaned or a wager bet. The heart needs
to be protected and because the opposite sign of Aquarius rules the
circulatory system some kind of aerobic activity is important. When the
Sun is in Leo or placed in the 5th house the vitality of self can best
be optimized for these individuals if they center at least some of
their workout around what they enjoy doing for recreation,
entertainment or fun. More than any other sign energy, Leo’s blossom
under natural sunlight and when overcast days prevail they benefit from
those full spectrum light bulbs and Vitamin C and D to keep their
spirits radiant.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Taking care of the soul through the vehicle of the body and visa versa
is an essential prerogative of the Virgo/Pisces polarity. Virgo and
Pisces, both share a vulnerability to toxins found in the external
environment and from undercurrents emitted by psychic vampires,
producing susceptibility to fatigue and stress related illnesses. They
tend to pick up everything in the environment including bugs and it is
important to keep the immune system strong with proper nutrition,
vitamin supplements and occasional periods of solitude (Pisces).
Libra (September 23 - October 23)
Most Libra’s I know love sugar and sweet confections. The waist is a
target area. This sign rules the kidneys so keep plenty of purified
water around for proper functioning. The lower back needs protecting
too. Think of Theodore, as in Alvin and the Chipmunk’s, who sang on
their Christmas album (baby boomers may remember LP’s); I think I want
a hulahoop and swing away to strengthen and trim the muscles that keep
the back strong and resistant to injury. Libra is here to learn about
relationships and they can be very motivated to participate in couples
retreats that share activities with a loved one. This Venus ruled sign
is affected by the feng shui of interiors so choose beautiful settings
to work out in and enjoy fitness attire that is as aesthetic as it is
functional...and light some incense and a candle to set an ambiance of
serenity.
Scorpio (October 24 - November 21)
Pretty much what you have heard about Scorpios is true. Their
relentless drive influences them to experience their passions sometimes
on extreme levels. Harnessed, this intensely focused energy propels
individual’s with this Sun to achieve at least one major transformation
in this incarnation. When power is utilized with the highest level of
integrity they motivate and inspire. When not directed in healthy ways
lower forms of this energy can spiral into patterns of obsessive
proportion. They need to break away from potentially self-imprisoning
habits. Reiki is an excellent tool to purify and restore energy.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
While Gemini (the sign opposite Sagittarius) may be content to jog
around the block, Sagittarius may prefer to run a Marathon; Marathons
that connect communities to fund raise for a cause appeal to this
sign’s philanthropic urges. Sagittarius rules the thighs and hips;
stretching will help keep the body flexible. Open spaces calm the
spirit and any activities in outdoor venues such as horse back riding
typically prevent freedom loving Sagittarius from feeling fenced in.
Moderation is key as this sign has a tendency to overdo whatever it
does.
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)
Capricorn values hard work and achievement; structured goals and
discipline; they need to balance career responsibilities with family
needs to stay young at heart. A gym close to work helps them manage
their day more efficiently. Watch calcium intake and Vitamin D
synthesis as bones and joints can be this sign’s weak spots. Preparing
the skin with nourishing moisturizers loaded with anti-oxidants protect
against a sensitivity to climatic changes and cold weather. Laughter
releases healthy chemicals from the brain into the body; a prescription
of favorite comedy re-runs helps counteract Capricorns’ inclination to
take life too seriously. When life is sometimes too serious borrow a
pair of rose colored glasses from Pisces and enjoy the world from a
more enlightened perspective; just for fun.
Aquarius
(January 20 - February 18)
Always expect the unexpected or unconventional with most Aquarians. I
have an Aquarian friend who, in order to remain fit, learned to surf
while taking kick boxing and belly dancing lessons. Aquarians also
thrive in group interaction either as coach or team player. Shin guards
or ankle support may be needed as these are areas vulnerable to
injury. The Aquarian Achilles heel can actually be the Achilles heel.
All Air signs need to learn proper breathing techniques and because
Aquarius rules the circulatory system it is even more important to
ensure enough oxygen is getting through the body.
Pisces (February 19 - March 20)
The Pisces individual has a tremendous capacity for compassion and an
innate need to be needed; however they need to be reminded that
self-care is not self-centered. When they are physically fit they are
better able to help others less fortunate. Invest in good footwear as
the feet are vulnerable. Pedicures and/or reflex ology reduce stress.
Planned alone time is imperative for this sign’s spiritual centering
and well being.
