Ina M. Major, 86, of Lansing, likes to keep busy. She’s a member of the Trinity A.M.E. Church in Lansing, gardens and is part of a 60+ Fitness Class.
Major, who was born in Jamaica to Chinese and Jamaican parents, came to Lansing in 1947. She has five sisters and one brother, six children and nine grandchildren.
“I love my family and thank the Lord for all the blessings I have,” she said.
She loves to travel, commenting on trips to Hong Kong, Nassau, England and Hawaii. She enjoys her sewing, crocheting and knitting, but gardening may be her favorite pastime.
“I look forward to spending time working in my garden, and every year I plant a variety of vegetables,” she said. “Currently I am growing beans, peas, squash, okra, cucumbers, bell peppers, hot peppers and eggplant. Gardening is fun.”
By joining the fitness class held at her church, she’s starting to see the benefits of working out.
“The classes have allowed me to gain strength by lifting weights,” she said. “It’s a full body workout and each week I feel stronger. I look forward to each class and repeat the exercises at home. Exercising increases my mobility and decreases some of my joint pain. I believe the exercise class allows me to work longer periods of time in my garden. And, of course, I appreciate the fellowship of classmates.”
