National Youth Sports Week: Encourage Youth Fitness
The sun is high and school is out for the summer. What a perfect time to tighten your tennis shoes, grab the kids and get moving! The House of Representatives has declared July 20-24th as National Youth Sports Week to promote youth fitness and character building through sports.
Physical activity is essential for healthy physical and mental development in children. Young people that engage in regular exercise are much more likely to lead a healthy lifestyle later on in life. Active children that participate in sports also reap mental benefits and tend to perform better in school, increase their self-esteem and develop interpersonal skills. Physical activity must be encouraged to combat our nation’s rising childhood obesity rates.
What can you do with your children to celebrate National Youth Sports Week and promote physical fitness?
1. Play a game of touch football
2. Go for a hike or walk at a local park
3. Play catch in the backyard
4. Go for a family bike ride
5. Sign your children up for a youth sports league
Getting your family outside and moving will reap amazing benefits. You will feel better inside and out, while spending quality family time together. My challenge for you this week: soak up the summer sun and get moving!
Visit the CDC website for information on how to make physical activity a regular part of your child’s life.
