Pregnancy help: Chiropractic care during a pregnancy may be the way to go
by Dr. Lynne Sowers
Due to postural changes, pelvic changes and increased back curve from the protruding abdomen, about half of all expectant mothers will develop lower back pain some time during their pregnancy. With the average weight gain of 25 to 35 lbs, you will find your center of gravity shifting and causing additional stress on your lower back.
Many women have found relief for their lower back pain and have had easier deliveries by receiving chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy.
It is so important for women to know how much better they may feel by being under chiropractic care while pregnant. Having two children myself, I’ve had the luxury of being adjusted before, during and after pregnancy by my husband.
During my pregnancy, there were occasional aches, pains, and low back discomforts that were helped by adjustments. After having children, there were a couple of unique situations. I had terrible mid-back pain after delivery that I believe came from nursing and holding my baby so much. I was so tired and just not at my strongest. I received an adjustment and felt so much relief! After my second child, I remember walking down the street and suddenly noticing that I was limping.
Each time I took a step, my left leg would move in an awkward, atypical way. This time, it was my pelvis. I received an adjustment and the normal motion was restored and my limp was gone!
As chiropractors, we adjust the spine to affect the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. The nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ, and system of the body. The nervous system is like the CEO of a company, directing all parts to work together. Even if you do not have pain, you need this clear communication so that the body runs more smoothly. You want your body to function at its’ optimum while doing the important work of growing a baby!
