Powers: My goal is a 5K!
You can see them year round on the sides of the street as you drive by. But it’s this time of year that they come out in swarms and can be seen at any time of day.
Some of them claim it’s therapeutic. Some say it’s the only way they can get going in the morning, while others… they claim it helps them to unwind from their day.
I’m not sure what to think.
I am, of course, talking about those dedicated runners that hit the pavement everyday along the road. When I drive past them, I look at their face, memorizing who it is, and it’s impressive—the regular ones never miss a beat or seem out of breath.
I’ve always been envious of them, wondering how they developed this habit of running and where they find the motivation to keep going. I find running to be one of the best habits that a person can have although it has never been a habit of mine.
That’s why when I was offered to train with Team Playmakers to become a runner this summer and blog about my experience I jumped at the chance. I’m confident that training with a group of runners will give me the chance to find in myself what all those athletes I pass on the road possess: drive and dedication to stay involved in running.
My goal is a 5K. I’ve never run one before, so this should be interesting.
My actual training starts on June 8, but before then I’ll be running a 5K to get a feel for what I’m getting myself into. Right now the idea of running a 5K intimidates me but I’m sure that wont be the case when the summer is over. Also running a 5K before my training begins will allow me to appreciate exactly how much I’ve improved my running throughout the summer. Then after my training begins I’ll be running several more 5K to track my progress.
Your role in my training is to sit back and enjoy the ride. I’ll be writing regularly on my training and 5K experiences along with anything I come across that I feel will be beneficial to those who are taking an interest in getting or staying fit themselves.
So stay tuned for the next entry and I’ll keep you posted on what’s next for me on my journey of becoming a regular 5K runner who finds herself running for the fun of it.

I’m looking forward to read about your progress. I’m also
wanting to get more involved with more activitys ie: walking, bicking and even some slow running.
Sherri, welcome to the wonderful world of running!! You are right, running is so motivational and inspirational. I was on Team Playmakers for a year and really enjoyed it. The staff at Playmakers knows what they are doing and is very helpful. I am still running a lot. I ran in the Detroit Half Marathon last October and hope to do it again this October. I am also training for a 5k, which is this Saturday. If you want additional information, you can contact me. I wish you all the best as you train for the 5k. Please keep me updated. By the way, I am Sally’s co-worker.
So impressed that you have taken this on. can’t wait to keep track of your progress, and hopefully be a little more inspired to get off my duff and get out there myself!
